Just had a week in Gressoney at the Hotel Dufour. Excellent hotel, lovely food. But in dire need of a new pool table!
Monterosa ski area remains Europe’s great ski secret. Pistes are quiet, even at weekends and deserted during the week, so off-piste remains untracked for days after a fall. Across the three linked resorts is an attractive cross section of long cruising reds, runs through the trees and plenty of off-piste opportunities, the latter making up for the lack of truly challenging reds.
Drawbacks are few, the links are prone to closure during high winds and the 2 very slow twin chairs out of gressoney need upgrading.
Plans are apparently to link to Cervinia and Zermatt via Frachey, but I think that would spoil what Champoluc, Gressoney and Alagna have to offer.
5 of my last 6 annual trips have been to this area, after years of skiing all over France and Austria, which says it all really.
