Best way to get there is by train. A 4x4 would be handy in the winter too. However, take the sleeping car from Bucharest and you wake up in the middle of the white mountains. Nice little town, few restaurants and bars, couple of decent hotels and plenty of cheap accomodation, fresh mountain air and amasing views. The skiing facilities are not the best in the world but the place makes up with beauty. Best times to go between end of December and end of February, can be cold at times but is a dry, continental cold, so with proper clothing you'll be fine. If you want adventure and don't mind walking through pristine snow through enchanted forests then go ask the locals about how to get to the Giumalau mountain. Get a guide if you can... Enjoy
