To say that Campo Imperatore can get very windy is an understatement. We were there 2 days and never skied. If you want any kind of apres-ski activities, this probably is not the place for you. If you're really used to a ski trip where you just walk out of your accommodation and can walk to pick up skis or go eat or go to a bar, Campo Imperatore might not be for you. Calling it a "resort" is a stretch. On the lower level there are hotels, but you then have to get into a large lift to take you about a mile up the mountain. On days when it's "too windy," the only lift does not go up the mountain. We stayed in the one historic but rather dungeon-like hotel at the top of the mountain (the hotel at the top is where Mussolini was held prisoner in the 1940s. Felt like that was just yesterday.) The room was seriously incredibly small/cramped (smaller than most U.S. dorm rooms). The room was so cold you really could not shower or stand naked in the bathroom. No joke. We're talking water-freezing cold. The "extra heating" for the room was a tiny, square little heater fan, about six inches high that you sit on a very tiny table. Turn it on and its vibrations just about moved it off the table. Most skiers who come here live nearby. No Nightlife at Imperatore. You go there, if there's no blizzard - like the whole time we were there - you ski. But after five pm almost everyone who comes there drives home. I don't think they have any night-skiing. Want a 360 ski vacation? Go someplace that really caters for ski visitors rather than for spartan local die-hards who ski. Don't come this far without knowing what you're bargaining for. Cheers & grazie d'Italia.
