Yamagata Zao Onsen in Japan (located in the Yamagata prefecture) is a large resort with 38 lifts that offers skiers an impressive 881 metres (2890 feet) of vertical descent. Yamagata Zao Onsen has 460 acres of terrain over 25 pistes. Yamagata Zao Onsen is best suited to intermediate skiers and snowboarders but there is some terrain for beginners and advanced skiers. We have no information about the existence of any cross country ski trails at Yamagata Zao Onsen. The nearest airport is at Sendai and the nearest train station to Yamagata Zao Onsen is at Yamagata. We have skied at Zao for the last 4 years. We love it here because it has let us experience traditional Japanese culture. Although there is not much English spoken here, we have managed. Although, the first year was a bit of a shock we have found the locals very friendly and helpful. In fact, some people even recognise us year after year. We hope to visit again. The resorts we have stayed in have easy access to the chairlifts and the locker rooms are good. Love the onsens. The runs suit us as we prefer green runs. There are more difficult runs. We also found an English speaking instructor and English maps.
